In honor of NBA legend and Los Angeles Lakers great, Orange County, California, officials have declared Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day.
Orange County supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to dedicate the day to the 18-time All-Star who died in January in a helicopter crash.
The date was chosen for the two jersey numbers Bryant wore during his 20-year career with the Lakers: No. 8 and 24.
It’s also a day after his birthday. He would have been 42 this year.
“A treasured member of our Orange County community, Kobe Bryant was the basketball legend that inspired so many young men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up,” said Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Michelle Steel.
“I’m proposing August 24 to be dedicated to the memory of Kobe Bryant, and all that he brought to Orange County community, which to (sic) strive to live by his words of encouraging those around us to never give up on their dreams,” Steel said. “The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do.”
Nike also announced it will honor Bryant with “Mamba Week” beginning Aug. 23. It will include product launches and programming. According to ESPN, it will be the first time Nike sells Bryant’s shoes or jerseys since his death. Read more from USA Today.
