Video released Sunday shows the moment a tractor-trailer carrying U.S. mail plunged nearly 50 feet off a bridge and into the water. The truck went into Charles River in Weston, Massachusetts, near Boston
The driver waited on top of the truck until help arrived. He called out to responders that he did not know how to swim
He was taken to a hospital in Boston, but no injuries were reported. The truck broke in half as it was being pulled from the river, spilling packages. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
A tractor-trailer carrying US mail plummeted off a bridge and into the icy Charles River near Boston Saturday morning, but the driver miraculously survived after he sought refuge atop the truck and yelled to first responders that he couldn’t swim.
Video released by the State Police Association of Massachusetts shows the terrifying moment the truck plunged nearly 50 feet off the bridge near the offramp from Interstate 95 to Interstate 90 in Weston.
The driver scrambled out of the truck’s cab as it became submerged under water, and waited for help to arrive.
State troopers and Weston firefighters responded to the area at 11:48 a.m. to find the truck partially submerged and the driver clinging to the top.
He called out to them that he couldn’t swim. Firefighters were able to rescue the driver and transport him to shore safely.
The driver, whose name was not released, was taken to the local hospital for evaluation. But no injuries were reported.
Weston Deputy Fire Chief Justin Woodside told NBC 10 Boston that firefighters were quick to respond because they were already out on the road in the area, shoveling hydrants from Friday’s snowfall. Read more from DailyMail
