More than 3,000 canines of all shapes and sizes and their handlers are vying for bragging rights and a trophy for the coveted best in show spot at the 146thWestminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
On Monday, contestants representing 209 breeds and varieties (which is a subset of a breed) – including Chihuahuas, toy poodles, mastiffs, and an American Fox Hound named Cardi B – demonstrated their skills and precision in the ring while jumping through hoops, climbing atop obstacles and being ambitious cuties.
Judges factor in traits such as teeth, temperament and agility to determine a winner. The winner in each group represents which dog best matches the “standard” for its breed, which takes into account the breed’s original function. For the first time, a Hungarian herding breed, mudi, and a Russian toy competed.
Separately, about 350 dogs compete in agility and obedience. Mixed-breeds are ineligible for best in show but can compete in agility and obedience.
No matter which dog is crowned best in show Wednesday night, these canines and their flawless fur coats deserve a moment in the spotlight. See more photos from USA Today.
