Trumpet, a beloved four-year-old bloodhound from Illinois, made history yesterday for being the first bloodhound to ever win “Best in Show” at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The biggest dog show in America is fiercely competitive—nearly 3,500 dogs competed for the sought after title at this year’s edition.

“I was shocked,” Trumpet’s handler Heather Buehner told the Associated Press. “Sometimes I feel the bloodhound is a bit of an underdog.”

Trumpet is part of a winning legacy; his father, Nathan, won the hound group in 2014. “He was kind of born a show dog; his father won the Hound group at Westminster in 2014,” Buehner explained to WCIA. “So we had high hopes for Trumpet.”

Despite Trumpet’s legacy status, his competition was stiff. Trumpet’s competitors included a top-ranked French bulldog named Winston, a glamorous Maltese appropriately named “Hollywood” and River, a handsome German shepherd.

Winston was ultimately the runner up, awarded the title “Reserve Best in Show”. Although the French bulldog didn’t snag that first place win, his owner, NFL defensive lineman Morgan Fox, couldn’t be happier. “I’m just so proud of him and the whole team,” the Los Angeles Chargers player told the Associated Press.

The year 2022 was a peculiar year for the Westminster Dog Show, the second oldest sporting event in American history. It’s usually held at Madison Square Garden in the wintertime, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the show moved to the Lyndhurst Mansion in Westchester, New York. Read more from Yahoo! Life.
