The first hurricane to threaten South Florida this season will come dangerously close Saturday, with forecasters unsure whether Hurricane Isaias will strike the state directly or follow the well-trodden path of storms that run parallel to the coast.

Hurricane watches and warnings went up across South Florida late Friday afternoon, as the predicted track of Isaias shifted toward the coast and raised the risk of a direct hit.

A hurricane warning, which means hurricane conditions are expected within 36 hours, was issued for the coast from Boca Raton through Brevard County at 5 p.m. A hurricane watch, which means hurricane conditions are possible, was issued for the entire Broward County coast.

Although South Florida had appeared likely to escape the worst of the storm, the picture darkened Friday afternoon as the forecast track shifted toward land.Read more
