In case you’re in need a fashion refresher, today’s top pants style seem to be a little all over the place at the moment. Straight- and wide-leg jeans have trumped our beloved skinnies, while suit trousers — otherwise known as work pants — have fully made a comeback, only this time they’re ultra-baggy instead of slim and tailored. Of course, sweatpants and leggings are still going strong, with people playing around with ways to dress them up. And now, there’s yet another budding pants trend to keep an eye out for: Ankle straps, which are essentially belts for your ankles.

Perhaps you remember that in 2019, fashion girls were exploring a styling hack involving strappy heels, tying them around their ankles over the bottom of their jeans. The trick — which was spotted via street style and on Instagram — was unfortunately short-lived, since we soon began reaching for the nearest sweat set after settling in at home. But, as we all emerge from lockdown, fashion as a whole is witnessing a sort of revival, and it seems like ankle ties are getting a second chance. This time, however, the straps are built right into the pants, so it’s one and done — no DIY necessary.

In a way, it’s the perfect time for this particular style to emerge. Cinching a pair of trousers at the ankle, for example, gives a would-be sharp and polished piece a slouchy, cargo-like appearance — an easy transition out of WFH life. The style also works for both a laxed ensemble and one fit for going all out.

In a nutshell, ankle strap pants are the trend we’ve unknowingly been waiting for amid fashion’s unofficially official transitional period, and there are a number of brands already on board. Read more from InStyle.
