It’s something you might expect from a television medical drama: A hospital transplanted a kidney into the wrong person — leaving the very-ill intended recipient waiting for a replacement.

University Hospitals in Ohio apologized for the mixup and said it put two workers on leave while it investigates.

“We are dismayed that an error recently occurred resulting in one patient receiving a kidney intended for another,” its statement  said.

Fortunately, the person who was erroneously given the kidney was compatible with the donated organ. But the patient who was actually first on the hospital’s transplant list, has had their surgery “delayed.”

The mixed-up surgery took place July 2, a spokesman for the hospital system said.

The hospital said that the United Network for Organ Sharing, which oversees transplants, is reviewing the incident “to understand what led to the error and to ensure that such an event will never happen again.”

“We have offered our sincerest apologies to these patients and their families.

“We recognize they entrusted us with their care. The situation is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to helping patients return to health and live life to the fullest.”

There was no further word on the overlooked patient’s condition or wait-time for a new transplant. Read more from Toronto Sun.
